Aaron Helm July 5, 2023

Criswell College takes great pride in celebrating the remarkable journey of one of its esteemed alumni, Dr. Stanton Norman. Graduating in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biblical Studies, Dr. Norman’s life and ministry exemplify the profound impact of a Christ-centered education.

Dr. Norman’s calling to ministry was a wrestling match that spanned his high school years. It was only after completing high school and enrolling at a local college that he felt the undeniable leading of God to surrender his life and career to the ministry. This pivotal decision set him on a path that would shape the lives of countless individuals he would go on to serve.

His connection to Criswell College began long before his enrollment. Growing up in South Oklahoma, Dr. Norman attended a small church where the pastor happened to be a Criswell graduate. Moreover, his personal journey of faith was influenced by Dr. Leroy Metts, who led him to Christ as a young boy in 1971. Thus, Dr. Norman had a deep and heartfelt connection to Criswell from early on.

In contemplating his tenure at Criswell, Dr. Norman fondly reminisces about the demanding academic environment that shaped him. He fondly recounts his early days at the institution when students, including himself, would bring their own briefcases to class as makeshift writing surfaces. However, it was the professors who made an enduring impression on his mind. Their unwavering commitment and profound knowledge not only honed his skills in exegesis and theology but also instilled in him the invaluable ability to engage in profound and critical contemplation of the Word of God.

The impact of his Criswell education reverberated throughout Dr. Norman’s life, ministry, and career. The college laid the foundation for his exegetical understanding, instilling in him a profound love for God’s Word and a commitment to faithfully interpreting and preaching it. He credits his exegetical and Greek professors for providing him with the necessary tools to succeed in both academia and ministry.

When asked about advice for young men and women aspiring to enter ministry or pursue Christ-centered careers, Dr. Norman emphasizes the value of being on campus to establish theological foundations. He encourages students to seek the best education available and, if possible, step out of their comfort zones, leaving behind what is safe and secure. Dr. Norman believes there is immeasurable value in being in the presence of professors, staff, and fellow students who can shape and challenge one’s faith and understanding.

In addition to his academic and ministerial achievements, Dr. Norman cherishes his personal life. Celebrating nearly 40 years of marriage with his wife in December, they have been blessed with three sons and are now joyfully adjusting to grandchildren. Dr. Norman’s love for pastoral preaching remains unwavering, as he continues to faithfully proclaim God’s Word.

Since his time at Criswell, Dr. Norman has served in various capacities, including professor, pastor, administrator, and now as the President of Williams Baptist University. He humbly acknowledges that this position was not sought after but rather orchestrated by God, and he is immensely grateful for the opportunity to serve at such an esteemed institution.

Dr. Stan Norman’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of a Criswell education, rooted in faith, knowledge, and a passion for Christ. His life stands as an inspiration to current and future students, reminding them of the profound impact they can make in their communities when they embrace the calling and equip themselves with a solid theological foundation. Criswell College proudly celebrates Dr. Stan Norman, a true example of faith, leadership, and a life devoted to serving God and others.
