Aaron Helm June 7, 2023

Education has the power to transform lives, broadening perspectives and fostering understanding. Martin Villoria, a passionate learner and seeker of knowledge, experienced this firsthand during his time at Criswell College. Graduating with his Bachelor of Arts in 2009 and Master of Divinity in 2014, Martin’s educational journey at Criswell played a profound role in shaping his worldview and equipping him to make a positive impact in diverse communities.

Martin’s introduction to Criswell College came in the summer of 2005 when his father, a student at Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS), shared his experiences with the institution. Intrigued, Martin decided to enroll and pursue his education at Criswell. Little did he know that this decision would shape his intellectual and personal growth in significant ways.

One of Martin’s favorite memories from his time at Criswell was the post-class gatherings with professors. These informal gatherings fostered a sense of community, where students and professors engaged in thought-provoking discussions about life and a myriad of ideas. Over chips and queso, Martin and his peers explored diverse perspectives, enriching their educational experience and nurturing their thirst for knowledge.

Criswell College was more than an academic institution for Martin—it became a catalyst for expanding his worldview. The curriculum emphasized the importance of holistic education, encouraging students to engage with various ministries, sectors, and institutions within society. Martin embraced this approach wholeheartedly, recognizing that his education should not exist in isolation but should equip him to interact meaningfully with diverse communities.

In 2009, Martin proudly graduated from Criswell College with his Bachelor of Arts, having gained a comprehensive understanding of the world and the tools to navigate its complexities. But his thirst for knowledge and desire to make a difference drove him to pursue further studies. In 2014, Martin obtained his Master of Divinity, deepening his understanding of theology and honing his skills to minister effectively to communities in need.

The impact of Martin’s education at Criswell College extended far beyond the classroom. He joined the Preaching Team in Immanuel Christian Fellowship in Aichi Nagoya, where he ministered to the Filipino Overseas Foreign Workers (OFW) community. Martin’s focus went beyond spiritual guidance; he sought to establish genuine and meaningful relationships with the Filipino community, exploring their unique role in knowing Christ and making Him known within the Japanese community.

Martin’s commitment to cultural exchange was further evident in his role as an Assistant English Teacher in Nagoya. Immersed in the local culture, he not only contributed to the education of Japanese students but also gained valuable insights into their way of life. Additionally, Martin shared his knowledge and experiences as a freelance resource speaker in Aichi Nishio. Addressing topics such as Cross-Cultural Communication, Art and Beauty, Christianity, and Love, he fostered understanding and dialogue among diverse audiences.

The foundation laid at Criswell College, coupled with Martin’s innate qualities of flexibility, adaptability, and teachability, have enabled him to navigate different contexts successfully.

These qualities continue to shape his journey as he strives to make a positive impact in various spheres of life. From fostering understanding between cultures to promoting meaningful relationships across beliefs, Martin’s education at Criswell College has equipped him to build bridges and create lasting change.

As Martin Villoria reflects on his educational journey at Criswell College, he remains grateful for the transformative experiences that have shaped his worldview. The post-class discussions, the emphasis on holistic education, and the opportunities for ministry and teaching have all played integral roles in molding him into a knowledgeable, compassionate, and culturally sensitive individual. Inspired by his time at Criswell College, Martin is committed to applying his education to create a better, more interconnected world—one built on understanding, respect, and the pursuit of Christ.
