Alumni Highlight: Dr. Dawna Duke ’09, ’16

Aaron Helm April 5, 2023

Dr. Dawna Duke, a graduate of Criswell College, has been making waves in the field of education. With a major in Biblical Studies and Christian Leadership, she has always felt led to ministry. Her passion for helping students reach their full potential and become aware of the resources available to them began in middle school and has driven her career ever since.

Dr. Duke first heard about Criswell College through alumni at her local church, Lake Highlands Baptist Church. She decided to pursue her education there and has fond memories of her time at the College. One of her favorite memories was attending Dr. Daniel Streett’s class, which prepared her for linguistic immersion while studying abroad. His lectures on Greek were incredibly insightful and helped her become better equipped in her studies.

Dr. Duke credits her education at Criswell College, specifically the New Testament Survey Class with Dr. Graham, for laying the foundation of critical thinking that she utilized in her Ph.D. studies. She is grateful that Dr. Graham taught his students not what to think, but how to think. This emphasis on critical thinking has proved to be valuable in her career, as it has allowed her to identify areas for improvement in her work.

For those considering a career in ministry or a Christ-centered career, Dr. Duke advises focusing on personal skills such as building connections and trust with others. She believes that connecting with people is essential to being successful in any career, but especially in ministry.

Dr. Duke has found joy in her work leading staff and students at Marsh Preparatory Academy. Her dedication to helping students reach their full potential has not gone unnoticed, and she was recently awarded the WT White Vertical Team Secondary Principal of the Year! Her impact on the lives of her students and colleagues is a testament to her passion for ministry and education.
