Dr. Barry Creamer Named Seventh President of Criswell College

DALLAS – The Board of Trustees of Criswell College voted unanimously on July 7 to appoint Dr. Barry K. Creamer as the college’s seventh president. Creamer, 51, has served as Criswell’s Vice President of Academic Affairs since 2011 and as Professor of Humanities since 2004. He will begin his presidency on August 1.

James T. Draper, Interim President of Criswell College, said of Creamer’s appointment, “The trustees of Criswell College made a significant choice today to elect Dr. Barry Creamer as the next president of Criswell College. He has poured his life into this school for ten years and has proven his ability as a scholar, administrator and effective leader. He has a brilliant mind with a compassionate heart. He values people and will lead by his example and with wisdom and grace. No better choice could have been made.”

Upon former president Dr. Jerry Johnson’s appointment as President of the National Religious Broadcasters last November, Creamer was named Criswell’s Chief Operating Officer and has managed the day-to-day operations of the college during the interim period. Johnson, who hired Creamer to the Criswell faculty in 2004, said that “Dr. Creamer is the right man, at the right time, for all the right reasons. As a former Criswell student, professor, and administrator, he is a Criswell man through and through. He knows and loves the college; as well, the college knows and loves him.”

A leading voice on cultural and theological issues, Creamer often addresses these topics on the radio program “For Christ and Culture,” which he hosts on KCBI-FM in Dallas-Fort Worth. He is also a fixture in the apologetics community, speaking at conferences and engaging in public debates with non-Christians. He has served churches in a variety of roles since 1982, and pastored Woodland West Baptist Church from 1987-2004. He wrote a chapter, “Article XIII: Stewardship,” in the 2007 academic book The Baptist Faith and Message 2000: Critical Issues in America’s Largest Protestant Denomination.

Creamer also serves as a trustee for the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC). Dr. Russell Moore, President of the ERLC, was enthusiastic about the board’s announcement. “I cheered when I heard that Barry Creamer is the choice to be Criswell College’s next president. Dr. Creamer is an intellectual with gospel fire and pastoral zeal. In Dr. Creamer, Criswell will have a president who is respected in the academy, beloved by students, and anchored to the cross of Christ.”

Dr. David Dockery, President of Trinity International University, added, “Dr. Creamer is a faithful follower of Jesus, a churchman of the first order, a solid academic leader, an experienced educator, and a person who well understands the current cultural challenges of our day. His commitments to biblical authority, the truthfulness of the gospel message, and a thorough-going Christian worldview will provide the framework for Dr. Creamer’s capable leadership in the days ahead. I join with many others in wishing God’s best for Barry Creamer and Criswell College.”

Creamer earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Humanities from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2000, a Master of Divinity (graduating summa cum laude) from Criswell College in 1994, and a Bachelor of Arts in English (graduating cum laude) from Baylor University in 1985. He is a member of Lake Highlands Baptist Church and has been married to Joan for 31 years. The couple has four adult children.

In sharing his excitement for the future of the college, Creamer said, “I am honored to build on an already storied and influential foundation to lead the school through what I believe are its most promising days.”
