The 2008 Criswell College President's Lunch at the Southern Baptist Convention Honors Two Outstanding Men with Distinguished Awards.
The Annual President's Luncheon took place on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 in Indianapolis, IN. This event is held each year during the Southern Baptist Convention for Criswell College Alumni and friends. Criswell College gave two honored awards to author and radio host Dr. Richard Land and Criswell College graduate and NY Times best-selling author Mark Tabb.
Criswell College Alumnus of the Year: Mark Tabb
Criswell College alum Mark Tabb's books have been published around the world. His 2008 release, Mistaken Identity, written with the Van Ryn and Cerak families, hit number one on the New York Times bestseller list for two weeks and remained on the list for over two months. He and actor Stephen Baldwin teamed up on their 2005 New York Times bestseller, The Unusual Suspect, and with their first work of fiction, The Death and Life of Gabriel Phillips, due out in November, 2008. Mark also worked with New York Yankee pitcher Andy Pettitte on Andy's book Strike Zone. Mark's critically acclaimed 2003 release, Out of the Whirlwind, was a 2004 ECPA Gold Medallion finalist. Future releases include his collaborative book with Alec Baldwin, A Promise to Ourselves, along with Mark's individual release, How Can a Good God Let Bad Things Happen?, both of which are due out in September, 2008.
Mark grew up in Oklahoma, graduating from Moore High School in 1979. He dropped out of college twice while searching for God's ultimate purpose for his life. In 1982 he joined the Norman Fire Department and got married. His career in the fire department was short-lived, and in 1983 he returned to school, graduating with highest honors from the Criswell College in Dallas, Texas in 1986.
After graduating from college, Mark embarked on his second career of becoming a pastor. He and his growing family served churches in Oklahoma and California before finally settling in Indiana. It was around this time that the writing bug bit Mark. In 2002 Mark changed careers once again when he quit his day job to write full time.
Mark and his wife of twenty-five years have three daughters and two dachshunds. When he isn't writing, Mark serves as the chaplain and a volunteer firefighter with his local fire department. You may contact Mark through visiting http://www.marktabb.com/.
W.A. Criswell Public Service Award: Dr. Richard Land
Dr. Richard Land has served as president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission since 1988. A graduate of Princeton and Oxford Universities, Dr. Land has represented Southern Baptist and other Evangelicals' concerns in the halls of Congress, before U.S. Presidents, and in the media. Additionally, in 2005, Dr. Land was featured in Time Magazine as one of "The Twenty-five Most Influential Evangelicals in America."
As host of For Faith & Family, For Faith & Family's Insight, and Richard Land Live, three nationally syndicated radio programs, Dr. Land speaks passionately and authoritatively on the social, ethical, and public policy issues facing our country. Dr. Land takes those on the right and the left to task for misstating God's role in America's affairs, suggesting instead that it is possible to "affirm and practice belief in God while simultaneously practicing a rigorous separation of church and state."
Dr. Land has authored several books and is also Executive Editor of FFV, a national magazine dedicated to coverage of traditional religious values, Christian ethics, and cultural trends.
Dr. Land's record as a pro-family advocate is capped by his proudest accomplishment - his over 30-year marriage and personal investment in the lives of his three children and his wife, Dr. Rebekah Land, a psychotherapist in private practice.

Dr. R. Alan Streett, Professor of Evangelism and Pastoral Ministry, has been named professor of the W. A. Criswell Chair of Expository Preaching at Criswell College. The position is named for the late W. A. Criswell, who devoted much of his life to the mastery and promotion of verse-by-verse expository preaching.
Dr. Streett is the author of The Effective Invitation and plans to re-launch the annual "W. A. Criswell School of the Prophets" in 2009. This national conference includes sessions featuring some of America's best preachers, as well as seminars that help pastors learn to prepare and deliver expository sermons.
The W. A. Criswell Chair of Expository Preaching is yet another academic feature that distinguishes Criswell College! Learn more about the rich history of the Criswell legacy and the resources available to Criswell students at http://www.wacriswell.com/.
