CRISWELL COLLEGE: RISING ABOVE GAS PRICES
Dr. Jerry Johnson, President of Criswell College, calls cabinet meeting to discuss concrete solutions to high gas prices.
DALLAS, June 25/Criswell Communications/ -- The President of Criswell College in Dallas called a cabinet meeting Tuesday afternoon in order to discuss the impact of high gas prices on the student body. Dr. Jerry Johnson plans to construct solutions including a block schedule of courses for the coming fall semester. Also on the docket for the fall semester are on-line courses and distance learning opportunities to relieve commuters and lessen the cost of travel.
"To help with increasing gasoline costs, Criswell College is offering commuter-friendly options," said Dr. Johnson on Tuesday afternoon. "We are scheduling more block courses, meeting one day per week, and reducing our three day classes to two day classes. In addition we are adding nine on-line classes and some courses by video conference." Dr. Johnson went on to say, "In one sense all colleges teach subjects, but more importantly we teach students. We are here for the students and want to make it easier for the students to come here. If they cannot come to the campus, we want to bring the learning experience to them."
Local community colleges across the nation have felt a great deal of heat, as students are now forced to consider skipping semesters or crunch class schedules in order to afford their education. Many community colleges are also taking a hit as some students make the tough decision to drop out indefinitely. Dr. Johnson is committed to help the students of Criswell College and views the rising cost of gas as an opportunity for the Criswell community to pull together on an issue that impacts everyone, both faculty and students alike.
Among some of the programs being implemented, Criswell College is offering "M.Div. Mondays." This program allows students to obtain a Master of Divinity degree by attending block classes only on Mondays. Another initiative is the "M.A.C. at Night" program, in which students are able to work on a Master of Arts in Counseling degree by attending evening block classes. Other potential programs and schedules will be covered in today's cabinet meeting.
As Criswell College staff carpool together and students ride bicycles to campus, Dr. Jerry Johnson is determined to do everything possible to help ease the financial stress and burden of commuters. The Student Life Office of the college has already experienced a tremendous amount of favorable response from both students and staff.
